My Experience About Interviewing An American Named Alex
I came across Alex, a young male American who lived on the same floor as me, and asked him several questions which I was most curious. Those questions included his favorite thing about UCSB and something about UCSB he wanted to change, his beloved and recommendatory TV programs on Netflix, his favorite video games, his advice to me as an international student, and his curiosity about China. He said to me that his favorite thing about UCSB is Santa Barbara where he could enjoy the beach, the weather and the palm trees, and Isla Vista, a square filled with parties and fun. However, he indeed wanted to move the oil rigs away from the coast. When mentioning movies and TV series, he told me that he was watching Midnight Sun and Venom recently and that his favorite one was Bird Box. He strongly recommended me to watch it when I was free.
By having a conversation with him, I got to know he was a huge fan of video games. He was thrilled when he told me to try playing Star Wars, Legend of League and Legend of Zelda. He also played many other computer games, but these three could be the top three in his game list. When I asked him to give me some advice, he encouraged me to communicate more with local Americans and advised me to be more open to American culture. He said he understood my feelings as an international student who would feel lonely and isolated sometimes. At the end of our conversation, he asked me something about the Spring Festival in China which seemed to be similar to Christmas in America.

To be honest, I was a little timid before I decided to interview him because we only said “hi” to each other when we met, and seldom talked for a long time before. However, I was relaxed little by little during our conversation, because he was passionate and friendly to me. Alex was very patient to answer my questions and behaved like one of my old friends. He played jokes with me and warmly invited me to play video games with him. Touched by his warmth and passion, I felt more confident after talking to him, and I did wish we could become good friends after the interview. His intense curiosity about Chinese culture has left a deep impression on me. I did not know an American would be so curious about an Asian country.

I must admit this was a precious experience for me, because, as an international student, I have made some connections with a local American. Although I made some mistakes during the communication, such as some errors in my spoken English and my limited listening ability, I still finished my interview with Alex who told me something about American pop culture and some preferences of local Americans. At the same time, I knew much better about Americans during our interaction. Americans are humorous, easygoing, friendly and inclusive. The most important thing was that I learned how to bravely and confidently express myself to others. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes, because opening your heart is the most significant thing.
