Context
The value of what you learn in Economics would be quite limited if you couldn’t apply what you learn to the contemporary situation in the "real world”. One of the best ways to connect classroom learning to reality is by staying current on current affairs. When you do that, then economic theories and concepts come alive; also, they become easier to understand. Furthermore, this activity encourages independent thinking that you will be able to apply after the course is over.
The Friday Reports are actually a form of extended research spread over the semester, and are a different approach to standard ISU work.
General Accountability
Your accountability for current economic trends and issues will come in 2 forms. You are expected to submit a short, written survey of current issues that you have been following. On tests or assignments you may be expected to refer to current, real situations as examples of economic concepts.
Resources
there will be back issues of several economic journals available to help you think of ideas
consider starting either with a current topic in mind and searching for 3-4 key sources, or starting with a significant article about a topic that interests you and then supplementing it with 2-3 additional sources
all key sources must be from recognized journals, websites or publications related to economics; you may use other sources as background only (i.e. wikipedia, etc.)

What does a Friday Report look like?
You are expected to submit a one-and-a-half to two page report (12 point font, double spaced) on your interpretation of a current issue that you have been following. Your issues should vary from report to report. You will express yourself in your own words. Only use brief quotes of a line or less properly cited.
Word or similar formatting for the report is required. The format of the report is formal, and should include a proper reference list in APA 6th. Use Word "references" tab and make sure the format is correct. Getting a proofreader is a good idea.
Include an intriguing or significant title, and date/teacher/course code in top right hand corner. No title page required.
Components
There are three important elements that should be present, and they should be balanced:
1.A summary of the issue discussed in the articles
2.A specifically referenced and detailed analysis of its significance in relation to some aspect or key concept in economics: why is this important?
3.Your informed opinion about the issue.
You should do your own significant research about the topic if you want to produce a superior submission.
How Current?
Your main article should be dated in the last 3-6 months old. Referencing older sources to provide background information and note longer term trends is highly recommended. Back issues are available through the class.
Process:
1.Begin right away by browsing the financial and economic section of a range of periodicals.

3.You may want to short list a set of topics that interests you and relates to economics. Choose a key article and start looking for 3-5 related articles that give depth/ background and indicate possible trends and importance for various aspects of the economy.
4.Develop a question/issue that you are going to try to answer in your FR. It might be your title.

Will the emerging economies recover?
Why does Britain want to leave the EU?
Why does the Keystone XL matter to Canada?
When will the Chinese Renminbi/Yuan replace the $US?
Will Canada’s residential housing market crash or land softly?
Can fracking save the US economy?
When will interest rates rise?
How does automation create jobs?
Should Greece leave the European Union?
5.Answer your question. Include an Introduction, clear thesis, 3-5 key points, and a conclusion as the analysis portion of the report (part 2 of 3).
Evaluation
The highest grade available per report is 15/15. Perfect marks are attainable if rubric criteria are met. Neither late nor early reports are accepted (unless mitigating circumstances).
Evaluation is based on clarity, economic insight, Christian perspective, writing style, and adherence to guidelines. It is expected that the sophistication of your reports increases as you progress through the course.
All students are expected to submit 4 reports at a minimum. You may choose to do a fifth report, in which case your mark will be based on your best four submissions, provided all submissions receive a passing grade and are handed in on time.
