A Comparative and Contrastive Analysis of Cultural Globalization
Michel-Rolph Trouillot states that globalization is a historical issue instead of a current phenomenon. As early as five centuries ago, the world started a trend of globalization (Trouillot 8). However, the global trend silences native people in most areas of Asia, Africa and America. Stuart Hall expresses the similar idea that the New World is the beginning of diaspora, of diversity, of hybridity and difference (235). The author admits the existence of globalization in history, but he pays more attention to the heterogenous and divergent aspect of globalization. Because of the invasion of European colonists, Afro-Caribbean people were forced to accept different culture and finally became people far away from their homeland culture.
Different from Trouillot and Hall who believe globalization began long time ago in history, John Tomlinson stresses globalization is the center of modern culture. Tomlinson also declares that globalization is a kind of complex connectivity which could narrow the distance between different places via current electronic communication technology. He expresses that nowadays all the things flow across territorial boundaries (Tomlinson 2). Trouillot admits the cultural transfer in globalization. He reminds his readers of Chinese chili paste from Mexico, French fries from Peru and Jamaican Mountain Blue from Yemen (7). But, at the same time, Trouillot criticizes that the past global culture is always silenced, which is just opposite to the opinion held by Tomlinson.

Giles Gunn distinguishes the binary of self and other by explaining people want to maintain their own culture in the way of disparaging and demonizing others’ value. He expresses his concern about the function of the traditional structure of “self” and “other” (Gunn 316). In other words, it is harder and harder to distinguish “self” from “other” in the global background. Hall also discusses the binary of self and other in a different way. Hall stresses the oneness in a shared and collective culture instead of highlighting the significance of otherness (223). He focuses on the unity within all the others.
