Lessons from the Vietnam War
Imagine a man who can be scared by car alarms, clock alarms, and the high-volume voice of others. Imagine the man who is used to be a brave and vibrant young man. Can we imagine the ways to connect these two significantly contrasted personalities of the men together? In other words, what are the experiences changed the man from a brave man to a nervous one? Someone might answer the questions with the point of mental diseases. However, after watching the 10 one-hour episodes of Ken Burns and Lynn Novick’s documentary, the Vietnam War (2017), a new answer discovers – wars especially the Vietnam War. The Vietnam War was the war occurred between the South Vietnam associated with capitalism and the North Vietnam in relation to communism. The war started in 1955 and soon escalated to one of the largest and longest wars in the US history after the intervention of the United States into the war to support the government of the South Vietnam. The direct involvement of the United States did not change the situation of the war but only brought the United States into the quagmire of Vietnam. The US troops withdrew in 1973 and the war ended in 1975 after the North Vietnam conquered the South Vietnam. In the documentary, Burns and Novick show the whole picture of the Vietnam War to their audiences, including the causes of the war, the course of the war, the end of the war, the experiences of soldiers and civilians from both sides, the opinions of people from both sides towards the war, and the lessons we should learn from the war. In details, from the Vietnam War, audiences of the documentary can learn the bloody, merciless, and inhuman characteristics of the war, the catastrophic, horrific, and traumatic experiences of the war’s participants, the universal hope of people to peace, the evil and unjust nature of war, and the importance and significance to promote the anti-war ideology in the world.
Lessons Learned from the Vietnam War

Figure 1: The Image of a Naked Vietnamese Girl Burnt by the US Military’s Fire Bomb (Ken and Novick, episode 9, 01:23:38)
Initially, from the Vietnam War, the most important lesson is to clearly understand its bloody, merciless, and inhuman characteristics against the human civilization. One scene in Ken and Novick’s documentary, the Vietnam War (2017) significantly shocks. As illustrated by Figure 1, a Vietnamese innocent girl was burnt by the fire bomb of the US army (Ken and Novick, episode 9, 01:23:38). She was a civilian who did nothing in the war. Importantly, in this picture, the burnt innocent girl was still driven by the US soldiers without care and mercy. The image demonstrates two points associated with the Vietnam War. Firstly, the war brought bloody and merciless consequences to all people in Vietnam including participated soldiers and innocent civilians in the war zone. Secondly, the war turned people into inhuman monsters who could hurt their same kinds even children and be indifferent to the damages and destructions brought by them. The two points demonstrate that although the US government defined the Vietnam War as the just war to promote democracy and civilization in Vietnam, it actually was a lie because the war was not a promotion of democracy but a promotion of destruction and inhumanity against the human civilization. As demonstrated by the documentary, even for Americans who supported the war, the image signaled “that is enough” (Ken and Novick, episode 9, 01:23:39). It means that for both sides of the war, the bloody, merciless, and inhuman characteristics of the war significantly challenged the civilized minds of their people.
Moreover, by taking the lessons from the Vietnam War, people can understand that the war is significantly unfavorable because it brought the catastrophic, horrific, and traumatic experiences to its participants in both two sides. As demonstrated by Karl Marlantes, a US marine in the documentary, fear and deaths were his only experiences in the war (Ken and Novick, episode 7, 01:44:17). At the end of the documentary, Marlantes demonstrated that he still experienced serious mental traumas and PTSD symptoms such as being fear of car horns today (Ken and Novick, episode 10, 01:17:04). Similarly, Vietnamese soldiers also experienced similar situations. One solider demonstrated that he wanted to die after the end of the war because he could not bear his traumatic experiences anymore (Ken and Novick, episode 10, 01:02:44). Accordingly, for both sides of people especially the participants of the war, their experiences in the way were significantly unfavorable and horrible even serious enough to induce their suicide thoughts. Importantly, these traumatic experiences could last for decades and resulted in serious influences on their mental conditions today. In other words, from the documentary, we have learned that the war was traumatic not only at the war time for its participants by bringing deaths and destructions but also at the peaceful time today by inducing their mental traumas and suicide thoughts.
Lessons about Peace
From the documentary, audiences can learn the universal hope of people to peace, no matter they are different in race, age, and gender or hold different political views, cultural traditions, ideologies, and religious beliefs. At the end of the documentary, many US soldiers in the Vietnam War went back to Vietnam after peace. They hugged each other and felt as old friends (Ken and Novick, episode 10, 01:36:52). From this scene, we have understood that soldiers of the United States and the North Vietnam were opponents in the war time but friends in the peaceful time. This scene demonstrated a point that people from both sides in the war all had a universal hope of peace. Importantly, the peace was happy enough for both sides of people to release their traumas experienced in the war, eliminate their hatred associated with their contrary situation in the war, and establish the understanding between each other. In other words, the documentary explained the war as an evil and unjust event in the human society and interpreted the peace after the war as a happy and pleased end for all participants in the war. Accordingly, this contrast highlights the importance and significance of peace to promote the tight connections of human beings from different races, countries, cultures, and religions in the world.
Lessons Learned from Burns and Novick’s Documentary
Audiences of the documentary, the Vietnam War (2017) also can learn that war has the nature of injustice. From the documentary, audiences can understand that the most important excuse used by the US government to directly participate into the Vietnam War was to help the US ally to fight against the threats and aggressions of the communist world represented by the North Vietnam. According to this excuse, the US government pointed out that the United States stood at the side of justice to fight against the injustice conducted by the North Vietnam. However, according to the illustrations of the documentary, this excuse made by the US government was untrue. The actual reason for the United States to directly participate in the war was the political interests of the United States to maintain its governing powers in South-East Asia and promote democracy in the region. Unfortunately, the involvement of the United States actually protected the dictatorship of Wu’s family but not democracy (Ken and Novick, episode 2, 01:16:20). Accordingly, on the side of the United States, its reasons for its involvement in the war were actually unjust. Furthermore, as the illustration by Huy Duc, a solider of the North Vietnam in the documentary, the United States wanted to bring democracy to Vietnam, but it actually brought destructions (Ken and Novick, episode 2, 00:30:10). Importantly, the North Vietnam was also the participant bringing destructions and massive killings in Vietnam. The illustrations demonstrate that on the side of Vietnam, the war was also unjust because it direct represented destructions and massive killings. Therefore, from both sides of the war presented in Burns and Novick’s documentary, the war was unjust even though both sides had proper excuses to support their own justices. The lesson from the documentary points out that war cannot be just because it only represents the interests of one side against another side and the false justices held by different sides.
Personal Missions for Global Peace
As a person who strongly stands for the ideology of pacifism, I will strongly recommend my friends, my family, and people in my community to watch Burns and Novick’s documentary in order to let them learn the lessons associated with the evil and unjust nature of war. Through watching the documentary, they can understand the evil and unjust natures of war. Furthermore, I will promote the anti-war ideology in my relationship network. After understanding the evil and unjust natures of war, my promotion can effectively motivate them to become the supporters of pacifism. Importantly, they will also promote the ideology of pacifism through their social networks to cover more people in the world. Through this effort, I believe that I can benefit the development of peace in the human world by turning more people into the followers of pacifism. In other words, although as an individual person my effort might be small compared to the whole development of peace in the world, my effort stills works in my social world and the effort will steadily promote to the whole world through the social networks.
Conclusion
From the Vietnam War and the demonstrations of the war by Burns and Novick’s documentary, the Vietnam War (2017), we have learned that the war was featured with bloods, inhuman activities, and destructions, which hurt people involved in the war, negatively influenced the human civilization, and destroyed the human society. We have also learned that the negative influences of the war could last for decades associated with the traumatic experiences of the war’s participants. We have understood that no matter what the excuses are, war is always evil and unjust. Importantly, for all people in the world, they have the universal hope of peace against war. Accordingly, the promotion of the anti-war ideology in the world is significantly important for every one including me. In other words, all human beings have the one ultimate mission – to protect and ensure peace in the human world. We have the responsibilities to achieve this mission to protect the human civilization and ensure the sustainability of the human world.
