Question 1 Preparation

Now, I have a better understanding of what my grandmother told me about poverty that she suffered before my compulsory education. I remember my grandmother use the words like “starvatio” “shortage” and “planned economy,” of which some I get the full meaning after doing some research. My grandmother remembers that when she was young, the provision is insufficient, and people cannot find enough food to feed themselves which lead to their malnutrition in the 60s’ of China. Her terrible experience about food, poverty, and starvation leave her cherishing the grain all her life which impacts her children and grandchildren. I were taught to work hard and take every grain of rice seriously, and pay attention to poverty when I was young. After being an international student from China, I major in Global Studies and know more about poverty across the world. However, I found it is reasonable to obtain a bachelor degree at the University of California at first. With a clear goal, I work hard and spare no effort to achieve it.
I start to make preparations at the outset. To me, it is not easy to gain the chance of studying abroad, and I take all courses seriously, especially those related to poverty and poverty relief. I earn the 3.18 GPA which illustrates the academic performance and my striving to fulfill my dream. Besides, it is necessary to collect all the information needed to make decisions, such as course, paperwork, and global influence. More importantly, majoring in Global studies, I have some ideas such as cultural background and poverty relief which can be researched in upper-division.
Based on the statements above, I think I qualified to apply for the transfer to the University of California, and I am ready to embrace the new life there.
Question 2 Creative side
It is well known that education is of significance to reducing poverty. However, it is worthy to notice that many postgraduates in China are in debt once they gain their degrees. Most of them have jobs, work hard and work overtime usually. But, they possess little disposable income and live in debt monthly. Along with economic conditions, the education, primarily the higher education accounts for it in China.
The cost of higher education is high and divided. Due to the industrialization of higher education taken into effect in the 1980s, the tuition of college and university have risen relative to family incomes, which has increased the burden massively of the families in the rural area of China. Besides, private colleges are a vital part of higher education in China. The tuition of private college is higher than that of public college. They take advantage of the students who failed to get access to the general college and make fortunes from the failures. It takes much more money for the students who enrolled in private colleges in China than those in public ones to obtain their degrees. Besides the tuition, the living cost should be paid attention to. It is acknowledged to all that meal allowances are available to students in public colleges while it is not easy to get in private ones.
The expansion of higher education leads to the failure of students. To colleges and universities in China, they benefit from scale effects. That is to say, the more student they recruit, the more educational fund or revenue they can get. Thus, they are attached to the expansion of their areas, majors, and branch schools. Sums of new major lack professional teachers and the curriculum are not preplanned as well. Students majored in those majors can gain the advantages they should get through the courses.
The higher education relates to the poverty of postgraduates deeply. However, factors such as social resources, economic situations, cultural backgrounds also play an important part. I hope I can do further researches at University of California
Question 3 Talent or skill
Drawing draws the world, both inner and outside. More than one friend asks me how did I like both playing basketball and drawing as well, which is hard for my friends to understand. You need to be active, and the surroundings are noisy while playing basketball; On the contrary, it is good for one to draw while for they need to focus on the board and active the brain. In my opinion, both playing basketball and drawing are the ways I express myself to the world, though the former directly while the later indirectly. On the whole, I prefer drawing better. By drawing, I know the world and recognize my inner world also.
I want to draw with heart. “One must always draw, draw with the eyes when one cannot draw with a pencil,” says Balthus, a Polish-French modern artist. What Balthus says implies that drawing with heart is better. When you draw with a pencil, you record the world on paper; while with the eyes, you draw with inner heart. The one who teaches me to draw is my mother who thinks drawing as a good way to express oneself. At the very beginning, I scrawl while my mother read my thoughts easily. Encouraged by my mother, I drew well with a pencil because I pursued the likeness and dreamed I could win prizes in the competitions held by the local community yearly. However, my mother teaches me to look at the competition differently. As always she says, “draw with your heart, not for the piece of red paper.” Now, I don’t get many “red papers” yet, while I make drawing as part of my life successfully. Due to the drawing, I make friends with people across the country, and know the wide world, and express myself freely.
Moreover, I picture a scene more than one time that when I am too old to play basketball, I will keep drawing all day with my drawings drawn with the heart on the wall.
Question 4 Educational opportunity
Take the lessons of the elder seriously, and they know more than the young do even they don’t own an iPhone X when I remember the volunteer experience about four years ago. It is the second day of National Day holidays that year as well as the Double Ninth Festival which is the same as Grandparents Day in American. My parents and I visited a local nursing home in Shenzhen early and did some volunteering all day. It is where that I realize the value of lessons of the elders. Concentration on one thing will pay off. It was about eight o’clock in the morning, my parents and I arrived at the nursing home as the principal asked. And I was assigned to do some cleaning for an old man who lived alone. When I entered his room, I was shocked. His drawings were hanging on the walls around me, covered the floor as well. I had no idea where to start at all. However, what impressed me most was his drawings which were all about mangrove forests. I immersed myself in admiring the drawings without any motion. Then I heard his voice, “Do you like drawings also?” I nodded, and the conversation began. He told me that he loved drawing and started to draw mangrove at his twenties when he moved to Shenzhen from the Southeast of China. He fell in love with mangrove the first time he saw it. He concentrated on drawing mangrove forests for about forty years and told me a lot about the mangrove which I had never heard before. I felt guilty that my drawings didn’t have a specific topic though I had drawn for many years. His concentration on mangrove forests pays off which inspired me most. After that day, I visited him many times and took him as my master.
