Sustainable Algonquin Group Project – ENL1823B (35%)
Scenario:
You have learned about environmentally friendly business practices through the summary and information report
assignments. For this project, you will recommend a sustainable business practice for Algonquin College or another
business to adopt. This assignment will be done in teams of two to four, and each team must make a different
recommendation (die to the ongoing situation, you may also choose to do this project individually). The objectives of
the recommendation report and presentation assignments are to get Algonquin or another business to adopt the
practice you are recommending, to raise awareness about green business practices, and to demonstrate your report
writing and presenting skills. There are four main stages to this assignment.
1. Using the templates provided, create a group contract with your group or a work schedule for yourself.. Submit this
to the Brightspace folder by 11:59pm on March 27th. (5%)
2. Get my formal approval for your topic by writing a proposal. Proposal due March 30th (10%)
3. Present the recommendation as a power point presentation. Due April 10th (10%)
4. Submit your recommendation as a written report. Due April 10th (10%)
Before you start these four assignments, you need to choose a green business practice that the college or other
business does not already perform and for which you can find at least three credible research sources.
You then need to sign up the green business practice in class, and ensure no one else has already chosen the same
recommendation.
NOTE: You may not choose to recommend edible cutlery to the college because it is covered in the proposal and
recommendation report student samples.
Group Contract and Schedule:
Your team will use the group contract template provided to make a contract with a working schedule that will include
one meeting per week for the duration of the project.
Proposal (Student sample and Figure 12.1 of the text):
1. Write a proposal asking for my approval of the topic for your recommendation report and presentation. Your
proposal needs to follow the indirect strategy and contain the following components:
• You need an introduction that gets my attention with some interesting information about the green
business practice you are recommending or why it is needed. DO NOT ask for my approval in the
introduction.
• You need background and goals that show me you will create a recommendation report and
presentation that meet the objectives and requirements for those assignments. • Give me lots of information about your research sources to show there is enough information from a
variety of sources to successfully complete your project. Show how you know that your chosen green
business practice has not already been adopted by the college or the business you have chosen. • You need a plan that lists the steps you will take to complete your recommendation report and
presentation. Your plan must include a schedule that shows me when you will complete the steps of the
writing process and that the recommendation report and presentation will be completed before the
deadlines. • You need a staffing section that lists the group members and their areas of responsibility for the
assignment. All group members must work on all assignments.
• You do not need a budget section – there is no money involved in the assignment.
• You need an authorization section that asks for my approval of your sustainable practice as the topic of
your recommendation report and presentation.
• You need at least three research sources in your references. Your references need to be in APA format.

2. Format your proposal as a letter addressed to me with at least one level of headings
3. Every group member must submit a proposal in the Activities/Assignments area. They should all be the same.
4. In the business world, proposals are either accepted or rejected. To mimic reality, this assignment will be graded as
pass (100%)/fail (0%). Since we are actually in an educational context, I will allow one rewrite if your proposal is
rejected. If the second attempt is accepted, you will receive 79%.
Presentation:
Your group will present your recommendation. Every group member must speak during the presentation for roughly the
same amount of time. You will deliver a persuasive presentation that follows the techniques for organization, audience
rapport, visuals, and delivery covered in Chapter 13 of the textbook. Due to social distancing you will submit two files
onto Brightspace. One will be a video of yourself giving the presentation on your computer. In this case, you will give
your presentation and then submit a powerpoint separately. Another option is add voice over narration to a powerpoint

Each group member must submit their part of the presentation, meaning the video AND the full powerpoint or the full
powerpoint with audio. The proper order of the submissions must be made clear so I know which person to watch in
what order for your presentation to make sense.
Each group member will speak for between 4 or 5 minutes. There should be an equal amount of speaking time across
group members.
1. Follow the AIDA plan for persuasion to get the audience onboard.
2. A power point with point form information and visuals is required.
3. Make sure the powerpoint has clear headings, logical flow, and relevant graphics.
4. A title slide needs to be the first slide. This should have the title of your presentation and the names of the group
members.
5. The second slide needs to be an overview slide where you break down the parts of the presentation and who will be
doing what.
6. Guidelines for effective powerpoints can be found on page 499 on the textbook.
7. A references page must be the final slide of your presentation
Recommendation Report (Student Sample):
Each member of the group will be responsible for two pages typed (500 words) for this report. Each group member’s part
of the report has to be clearly labeled with their name so I know who did what in the report. This is not optional.
1. Assume you have an unreceptive audience, and write your report using the indirect strategy.
2. You have to convince your audience to implement the recommendation, so be specific about costs, savings, and
benefits.
3. Include an appendix with relevant supplementary information that supports your recommendation.
4. Document your sources (at least three) using APA style in-text citations and a References page.
5. Format your report as a letter addressed to me if you are making a recommendation to Algonquin College. Address
it to someone at your chosen company if you are making a recommendation to a different organization. Include at
least one level of headings.
6. EVERY member of your group must submit a copy of your report in the Activities/Assignments area.
7. You will be graded on content, including incorporation of an appendix; organization, including use of the indirect
strategy; style, mechanics, format, and APA referencing according to the report writing rubric on Brightspace.
