Topic
The conflict between private (私) and public (公) interest, selfishness and altruism, plays
a central role in Chinese society. In theory, Chinese moral ideals promote altruistic
actions, but in practice, Chinese history is filled with examples of selfish actions. Heroes
are typically portrayed as altruistic, and villains are portrayed as selfish. How can we
reconcile these contradictions? How do you define selfish and altruistic actions in the
Chinese context, and what are some examples? Are selfish actions or altruistic actions
more important in shaping historical developments in China? Use concrete examples and
evidence from the history covered in this course to support your argument.
Requirements
Length: 1,500 words (honors students: 2,500 words), exclusive of notes and references.
Formatting: Times New Roman size 12 font, double-spaced, left justified, 1-inch
margins, pages numbered.
Style: Academic/professional prose. Think of your audience as not just your teachers, but
also your peers, especially those who are not taking this class. You are writing to
persuade them that your interpretation of Chinese history is more meaningful than all the
other competing interpretations they have heard of. Your goal is to convince them that
your interpretation of the past can help them better understand the world today, too.
References: Your argument must be primarily based on evidence from the course
materials (Textbook and document readings, lectures etc.). The assignment is not meant
to be a research paper or report. Nevertheless, when you use any information in your
paper that you got from someone else’s work, you must give them credit and cite their
work. Besides showing respect for others, the purpose of citing your sources of
information is to make your analysis and thought process as transparent as possible. If
your readers are unable to verify your sources of information, then they will not believe
you. Please use the Chicago Notes and Bibliography Style for your citations, which
includes footnotes at the end of sentences and a bibliography at end of the paper. See

If you choose to use Chinese-language sources, you must provide bibliographic
information for both the original Chinese and an English translation. If no English
translation exists, then only use the source if your section instructor can read Chinese.
Deadlines and Assignments
1. Week 7 discussion section (Oct. 3-5) – submit paper outline with thesis statement
and outside references, if any.
a. Thesis statement: express your main argument or point in one sentence.
b. Outline: provide a relatively detailed overview of how you plan on
organizing your paper/argument. This may include, for example, section
headings and main ideas, examples/evidence you plan to use, and/or topic
sentences of paragraphs. Keep in mind that a 1,500-word paper only has
about 10-15 paragraphs.
c. Outside references: If you choose to use any outside references, you must
list them on your outline. Under normal circumstances, in your final draft
you will only be allowed to use the outside references you list here.
2. Week 12 discussion section (Nov. 7-9) – submit complete first draft.
a. First draft: should be a more or less completely written, but far from
perfect, paper.
3. November 30 – submit final draft on ICON.
a. Final draft: Polished draft that fully addresses any suggested revisions.
Grading Criteria
Each stage of the writing process will count towards your total term paper grade as
follows:
Outline 25%
First Draft 25%
Final Draft 50%
Each stage will be graded according to three major criteria:
1. The persuasiveness of the analysis or argument.
a. Goal: A persuasive argument changes the way your reader thinks about
the topic. The overall development of the argument builds up to a new
insight or larger idea, rather than just repeating the thesis. Achieving this
usually involves a combination of insightful ideas, new evidence or new
perspectives on existing evidence, and well-crafted writing.
2. The accuracy, relevance, and quantity of evidence used to support the argument.
a. Goal: Strong evidence convinces the reader that your argument rests on
solid facts and has meaningful implications for a broader audience. Your
evidence must come primarily from the course materials. If you feel you
must use outside sources, then they must be listed in your paper outline.
3. The clarity and effectiveness of the organization and writing.
a. Goal: The language of a well-written paper in itself strengthens the
persuasiveness of the argument. The paper has an introduction with a
thesis statement, a body with ample evidence and analysis, and a
conclusion. Each paragraph has a topic sentence that summarizes the main
point of the paragraph. Transitions between paragraphs are smooth and
logical. Sentences are clear and concise, and typographical errors do not
distract or confuse the reader.
