Critical Analysis of Dr. Aziz’s Changes in A Passage to India
A Passage to India, written by E. M. Forster, narrates the experience of Adela Quested and Mrs. Moore, two English women, who come to Chandrapore, a fictional city of India, to visit Mrs. Moore’s son. There they meet Dr. Aziz who offers to take them to Marabar Caves. Overcome with claustrophobia, Mrs. Moore refuses to enter the caves because she physically uncomfortable entering the cave, while Adela enters a cave and feels insulted by a man. As Adela comes back to the city, Aziz is acroced of sexual harassment and causes Aziz to be arrested, which in turn arouses the racial tension between the British and the Indians. Convinced that his friend Aziz is innocent, Mr. Cyril Fielding, an Englishman, is isolated by other Britains. Finally, at the trial, Miss Adela admits that her shock is not because of the sexual assault but because of her physical discomfort in the cave, as a result of which Aziz gets released. Angry with the friendship between Fielding and Adela, Aziz decides to end his relationship with Fielding. The novel ends with Aziz’s statement that he and Fielding cannot be friends as long as India is still a colony. At the same time of sensing the strong and rigid racial hierarchy in India, readers can also easily feel the changes of the main characters with the development of the plot, which can be easily observed from Dr. Aziz. Overall, with the development of the plot from the initial debate between Aziz and his friend to the sexual harassment charge against him and then to his reunion with Feilding, Aziz changes from an innocent and impulsive one, to one who is greatly critical of the racial relationships between Britain and Indian and then to a nationalist who develops a realistic understanding of the social realities and becomes keen to pursue India’s independence of Britain.
Aziz starts by behaving like an innocent, superficial, talktable and impulsive Indian, ( Add more detail here)When English people first come to India he seems friendly with them. One of the most prominent features of Aziz is frivolous. Despite his good education as a physician, it seems that this talkable man never takes things seriously and gives serious consideration of what he says. For instance, in Chapter II, Aziz and his friends engage in a debate regarding whether it is possible to make friends with the Englishmen, Aziz says, “Why be either friends with the fellows or not friends? Let us shut them out and be jolly. Queen Victoria and Mrs. Bannister were the only exceptions, and they’re dead” (Forster 18). In this statement, Aziz expresses his extreme ideas regarding the debated topic. As he says “let us shut them out,” he takes an extreme attitude. It seems that it is impossible for him to make friends with the English people. When he adds that the only two exceptions are Queen Victoria and Mrs. Bannister who are deceased in a satirical way, he also leaves no room for negotiation regarding excluding the English. However, it turns out that unlike Mahmoud Ali who has been serious and critical, Aziz is not actually serious at all, especially in consideration of the way he pleases Adela and Mrs. Moore. In their conversation at the tea party, ( add transaction )later as Mrs. Moore expresses her dislike of the muddle, Aziz says, “There will be no muddle when you come to see me...I invite you all-oh, please” (Forster 62). However, the fact is that his bungalow is very small and unsanitary with only one room and black flies (Forster 63). It is easy to observe that Aziz is making an arbitrary and bombastic statement. He does not give a serious consideration of what he promises. The way he interacts with Fielding and the two Englishmen also reveals how eager he is to please them, exactly contrary to his statement in the debate with his Indian friends.

However, after the trip to Marabar Cave, great changes have taken place to Aziz who gets more critical and intolerant of the English people with the exception of Fieldings. After the Marabar Cave, as Aziz gets off the train, he is arrested immediately. From then on, great changes have occurred to Aziz. ( Transation from Aziz got arrested to released) During the court, English people want to put Aziz in the prison, however during the court Aldela says that Aziz didn’t do anything to her so he gets released. From that point Aziz’s attitude toward English people changed. For instance, when Aziz is released, he is no longer that talkable and sociable any more. Instead, “Aziz was full of civilization this evening, complete, dignified, rather hard” (Forster 210). Here it is easy to observe the radical changes in the way Aziz is depicted. The description focuses more attention on the facial expressions of Aziz and his gestures. It seems that it is a great honor for him to be proven innocent, especially in consideration of the racial tensions between the Indians and the British who hold contrasting positions. Compared with the chapters before the travel to Marabar Cave that includes numerous words from Aziz, in the chapters following Aziz’s release, the words uttered by Aziz are reduced greatly, which fully reveals the impact of the imprisonment on Aziz’s personality by shaping him a more serious and careful man.
At the end of the novel that depicts the meeting between Aziz and Fielding, although Aziz is still quite emotional extreme and emotional, he has transformed into a keen nationalist and realist. Here in Chapter XXXVII, as Aziz and Fielding meet again two years after their separation, their misunderstandings disappear. It seems that they could be best friends again. However, the fact is that Aziz refuses to consider Fielding as a friend until India becomes a free and independent Nation. When it comes to the underlying reason, it has nothing to do with Aziz’s personal feelings about Fielding but relates to the racial relationships between the British and the Indian as two ethnic groups in India. This point can be best illustrated in the statement of Aziz that “Down with the English anyhow. That’s certain. Clear out, you fellows, double quick, I say. We may hate one another, but we hate you most” (Forster 364). In this statement, these words such as “hate,” “clear out,” “down with,” and “double quick” fully reveal the anger and hatred Aziz holds towards the British colonists Fielding belongs to. Compared with his past idea that Fielding and he can still be friends, in this last chapter, Aziz has developed a clear awareness that without equal social status and mutual respect for each other’s racial identity, the personal friendship is meaningless. Here it is quite apparent that Aziz no longer considers himself immune to the influence of the political and social environment. Instead, he feels a strong sense of responsibility towards his nation and considers the pursuit of the national independence and freedom as his individual efforts. In this way, as Aziz clarifies India’s freedom as a precondition of his personal relationship with Fielding, he becomes more realistic and serious by examining his personal relationships under the political context of his era.
Based on the above illustration, it is quite apparent that great changes have taken place to Aziz throughout the whole novel. The changes that occur to Aziz could be best reflected in the way he treats Adela, Mrs. Moore, and Fielding as three individuals from the ruling race. At first, although Aziz expresses his criticism of the Englishmen and his intention of expelling them out, he does not give a serious consideration. Instead, he keeps trying to please Adela, Mrs. Moore, and Fielding by inviting them to his house that is actually unsanitary. Here Aziz fully demonstrates himself as a braggart, innocent, and superficial one. However, faced with the sexual harassment charge from Aleda, he becomes more critical, emotional, and skeptical. Although Fielding has been supportive of Aziz and shows how much he values his friendship with Aziz, Aziz still decides to end his friendship with Fielding. In fact, set in the early 20th century when India was under the colonial ruling of Britain, it was hard to establish a friendship between one from a “superior” race and one from an “inferior” race. The last chapter of A Passage to India reveals Aziz as a realistic nationalist who actively desires the independence of India and. In this way, the image of Aziz is completed changed into an activist who refuses any connections with the English people, despite his intimacy with Fielding.
