Othello: Shakespearean Tragic Hero
William Shakespeare is one of the greatest writers of all time. The creations of Shakespeare contain both the comedies and tragedies. Othello, one of the four tragedies of Shakespeare, describes a story of the character named Othello, who is a Moorish general in the Venetian army. With the development of the story, Othello transforms from the faithful general who is genuinely in love with his wife to the tragic character who kills his wife by hand due to the false premises he has towards his wife due to the flattery of one of his stuff, Iago. It is the jealousy of Iago and Othello that eventually cause the happen of the tragedy. Othello is a typical tragedy of Shakespeare. However, is Othello the character a typical Shakespearean tragic hero? Through the analysis of the perspectives of the identity, behaviors, and the ending of Othello, it is valid to conclude that Othello is a typical Shakespearean tragic hero.
Identity & Characteristics

Othello’s identity as a pride general, his faithful love to his wife, and his persistence of equality, all formed him as the typical Shakespearean tragic hero. In order to be a Shakespearean tragic hero, one must be a person with high social statuses such as a king, general, or a nobleman. In terms of Othello’s identity, he is a general of pride in the play, which does fit into the formula of a typical tragic hero who often is in a position that should be the representation of justice and goodness. From the first two act of Othello, the readers can tell that Othello is a responsible general who strictly observes his duty and does not mind to break the doctrines.
For instance, he is a man without any doubt towards his wife. In the third scene of the first act, when his wife is said to be a person with lies, Othello’s response is: “My life upon her faith” (Shakespeare and Neill 37). In other words, Othello considers his wife as a person of integrity. At the beginning of the play, even the defamation from Desdemona’s father cannot change his love to his wife.
Besides the faith he has towards love, he is also a leader with considerable insight. From the talking between the Roderigo and Iago in the first act, Othello has assigned Cassio, the younger yet more qualified person than Iago, as his lieutenant (Shakespeare and Neill 5). By assigning Cassio, Othello shows his unbiased strategy in using the capable person in spite of their age or seniority. Also, he can stick to the regulations. When Cassio breaks the rule by involving in a drunken fight, he does not shield Cassio’s crimes and relieves Cassio of the lieutenant.
Moreover, the pride of Othello is also the tragic flaw of him. It is the pride of the General that makes him have no tolerance in his stuff and lover. Othello can be able to promote the man who fit the position and trust her wife is because of his pride will not allow him to doubt his own judgment on those people. However, pride also contributes the same efforts to distract him when Othello is confused by Iago. It is the pride that makes him remove Cassio’s duty without giving him a chance to defend himself. It is also pride that makes Othello kills his wife when he believes he handles all the information. When he realizes his pride leads him to the unforgivable consequences, he chooses to use suicide as the final punishment of him. Overall, Pride is the primary motivation that pushes Othello to be an honorable General while it is also the original sin Othello acquires that sets him into the tragic he cannot escape.
Overall, based on the first and second act of Othello, the character of Othello does follow the pattern of the typical Shakespearean tragic hero since he is a General with flaw of pride and virtues of integrity and love for his wife.
Behavior
Besides his standard identity as the tragic hero, his behavior also follows the pattern of the Shakespearean tragic hero as a man with great power who also is blindfolded by his own virtues or values. As the general, Othello’s actions can cause significant impact on the people, especially his fellow staffs. He has the power of deciding who can be his lieutenant and firing them at any point. Othello’s pride makes him the leader with integrity. However, the sense of pride also makes him the person who does not doubt his own judgment. Once he sees what he believes to be the truth, he will not change his judgment due to his pride and trust towards his own judgment. When Othello fires Cassio off of his position, he does not consider whether Cassio is being set up or is he deserve a chance to remedy on his fault. Out of his pride, Othello fires Cassio directly. This move of Othello makes him fell into the trap of Iago. The pride of him transform into the envy and jealousy towards the people around him. From then on, each of his move or action is the deepening of his misdeed. Also, another point to identify Othello as the typical Shakespearean tragic hero is that Othello does not have the right perception of the reality. Although Iago is the man who causes and stimulates the transformation of Othello, it is the pride of Othello that stops his will of hearing from Cassio and his wife. Overall, the behaviors of Othello, such as the great consequence of his actions, the ignorance towards the truth, the deepen mistakes that Othello make, and the transform of his virtue from pride to jealousy, all form Othello to be the typical Shakespearean tragic hero.
Ending
Last but not least, the climax of Othello is also the proof that the character Othello is the typical Shakespearean tragic hero. At the fourth act of the play, Othello sees the handkerchief that he gives his wife in the hand of Cassio (Shakespeare and Neill 147). After this incident, even though both his wife and Cassio all state to him that they do not know why this handkerchief is in the chamber of Cassio, Othello sticks to his judgment due to the persuasion of Iago. Eventually, the misheard conversation between Cassio and Iago completely triggers Othello (Shakespeare and Neill 131). At that moment, Othello finally decides to kill both his wife and Cassio. The anger of him definitely makes the audiences feel the fear of what is about to happen. Moreover, the total unawareness of Othello towards the real situation also makes the audiences feel pity about Othello. Eventually, Othello kills his wife by his hand (Shakespeare and Neill 193). After being exposed by the truth, Othello realizes that he is wrong the whole time. At that moment, all the people around him judge Othello for his horrible act of killing his own wife. Also, Othello himself suffers more inside his own mind. He knows that his wife has never been cheated on him. Facing the unchangeable truth that he kills his wife, that all his fellows are hurt by his behaviors, Othello finally breaks down and kills himself beside him and his wife’s bed (Shakespeare and Neill 211). All in all, combining the fact that Othello experience both the isolation and tortured regret, that he receives both the pity and fear from the audiences and that he realizes his fault at the end and kills himself, it is reasonable to state that the ending of Othello also fit into the Shakespearean tragic hero.
Conclusion
In conclusion, after the description from Othello’s identity, behaviors, and ending, Othello is the typical tragic hero of Shakespeare’s masterpieces. Shakespeare creates the Othello as the tragic hero. From the aspects of Othello’s identity, he is the general of pride who are the respectful leader and the lovable husband of his wife at the beginning of the play, which fits perfectly into the characteristics of the tragic hero of Shakespeare. Moreover, his behaviors such as causing a significant impact on the people around him, his ignorance of the truth, and so on, are also the features of Shakespeare’s character. Besides the identity and behaviors, Othello also ends with the tragically heroic death. Therefore, Othello is the Shakespearean tragic hero.
