Comparison between “Moonlight” & “Brokeback Mountain”
“Moonlight” is the movie directed by Barry Jenkins in 2016, whose theme is to convey issues like the school bullying, the discrimination towards the people of homosexuality, and the severe influence that unhealthy family conditions can cause to the children. It illustrates half of a young African American boy, Chiron’s life by dividing his life into three periods, the childhood, teenage life, and adulthood (Jenkins). Those issues of family, school, and himself are described through the three periods of his life. The movie I choose from my personal experiences of watching a movie is the “Brokeback Mountain” directed by Ang Lee. Brokeback Mountain is the movie that tends to show the struggles and love between two characters named Jack and Ennis who are both homosexuals (Lee). The reason why I choose those two movies is that they have the similar main theme with each other, which is the emphasis on the issues that the people of homosexuality have to face in their life. Brokeback Mountain and Moonlight have a similar storyline while they still have their differences in their emphases. Moonlight emphasizes the story of the life experience of Chiron. Through his experiences, the struggle of being an African American person and a person of homosexuality is within the life of Chiron. On the other hand, Brokeback Mountain focuses its arc in their love relationships with each other and the contradicting real life situation. Therefore, through the analysis of Moonlight and Brokeback Mountain, their common theme of homosexuality and different emphases will be discussed and illustrated.
Common Theme
Even though Moonlight and Brokeback Mountain have the differences in the problem-stating process and emphases, they still build their arc under the same theme, which is to show the living conditions of the homosexual people. Moonlight and Brokeback Mountain even have similar scenes in the development of their character. For instance, both the characters of homosexuality that the main characters love to use a relationship with a girl and have a kid. In Brokeback Mountain, both Ennis and Jack seek the relationship for another girl and have children even though they are still deeply in love with each other (Lee). Also, in Moonlight, Chiron’s lover Kevin also encounters a female lover (Jenkins). Even though Kevin does not marry the girl, they still have a kid together. These part of the movie tends to reflect the compromises the people of homosexuality make in their life. Both the movie set their background in the environment where people pf homosexuality faces more judgments or even direct attacks due to their identities as the minorities. Jack and Ennis are the lovers from the west part of the United States, where people are not as inclusive as the society on average. What’s more, Chiron, as an African American, also faces more discrimination than people of different races. Overall, Brokeback Mountain and Moonlight have the common feature on their theme of reflecting the struggle the people of homosexuality have.
Different Emphases
Besides the similar theme Brokeback Mountain and Moonlight have, there are also differences in their emphases, which Brokeback Mountain emphasizes on the love between Jack and Ennis while Moonlight focuses on the various social issues such as the school bullying and family issues. In other words, Brokeback Mountain is a romantic drama that mainly focuses on the reflection of the romantic struggle between Jack and Ennis while Moonlight is the coming-of-age drama which focuses on the different obstacles and struggles that Chiron faces during his growth. For instance, even though Brokeback Mountain also mentions the life story of Jack and Ennis besides their love affair, the audiences still care about the development of their relationship with each other the most (Lee). However, Moonlight shows the objective process of Chiron's growth. His sexual orientation is only one of the perspectives that the movie is trying to represent (Jenkins). His experience of being bullied at school, or being influenced by her drug-addicted mother are also the factors that shape him as a person. Overall, as a romance drama, Brokeback Mountain focus on the love relationship between Jack and Ennis while Moonlight shows the whole growth process that Chiron experiences.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Brokeback Mountain and Moonlight have the common theme of showing the struggle life of the people of homosexuality and also the different emphases that Brokeback Mountain focuses on the love of Jack and Ennis while Moonlights shows the whole struggle of Chiron as an African American child who is also a person of homosexuality.
