I. The final / debate prompt:
“When applied to a given situation, elements of each of our theories in IR can be used to predict
quite different outcomes. It is not true that realism pessimistically predicts constant conflict, or
that liberalism or constructivism optimistically predict cooperation. Much depends on the
particular situation we analyze.
“If we apply our current theories to one of the most dangerous crisis situations in the world
today, the North Korean nuclear threat, these theories can be used to predict different outcomes.
On the one hand, one can find elements within each theoretical approach that leads us to expect
constantly escalating tensions, making major conflict likely or even unavoidable. But other
elements of these theories might predict that the countries involved will be able to avoid open
conflict, and perhaps resolve the situation peacefully. Only one of these sets of predictions will
prove to be accurate.”
Some notes on the prompt: For the debate, one team will argue that the Korean situation will
be highly conflictual, drawing on elements of IR theories. The other team will argue that the
countries involved will be able to avoid major conflict, drawing on other elements of IR
theories. (If your team was on the Realist side for the midterm, you will be taking the "peaceful"
side; if your team was on the non-Realist side, you will be arguing the conflictual side.)"
A reminder that you should focus on what our THEORIES would predict, or how the theories
explain or don’t explain what is happening, rather than the specifics about the North Korean
crisis. I will send a few short articles that will give you enough empirical information to do this
essay (combined with the Baylis book and lectures).
So, do not focus too much on the empirical details of the relationship, but rather focus on
drawing out insights from the theories, and assessing their strengths and weaknesses. We are
looking for your overall critical assessment of the different theories and approaches we have
covered in this class.
