Interview report
How many cinemas does China will by the year 2021? The number maybe astonishing according to the PwC’s Global entertainment and media outlook 2017-2021. In this report, it says that China had 41,056 cinema screens in 2016 and it will increase to 80,000 by the year 2021. (“China to be No.1 globally in IMAX 3D screens by 2021”) However, that's quite another pair of shoes at the 1970s’ in China. Fu Suqing, aged 59, begun to watch movies in the 1970s’when the country promoted the Revolutionary Model Dramas such as Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy, Sha Jia Bang, The Red Lantern, etc. on a national scale. However, he liked Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy very much and fell in love with movies since then. Now, he lives in Los Angeles, CA. with his sons who obtained his decent, well-paid job after he gained his Master degree of Art in 2010. To Mr. Fu, watching movies is still an important part of his daily life at home. I am lucky enough to have an interview with Mr. Fu. With the help of Mr. Fu’s reminiscence, I realized that the open-air cinema played a vital part in the cultural diffusion in rural China about 40 years ago and had huge impacts on the occupations and educations of the youth.
Thanks to the promotion of the country, outdoor cinema prevailed. Back to the village in poverty in the 1970s’, it is tough to watch movies for the common. The news on movies came from the newspaper and the broadcast room of the village. “It is in September 1972 when I watched the movie, Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy, at my age of 13,” recalls Mr. Fu. Asked about the reason he remembered the date clearly, he says it is not far from his birthday of thirteen. “If you are at the age of 13, you should be able to feed up yourself,” Fu added. What he implies is that the boy up to the age of 13 will be treated as an adult to work at the farmland earning the work points which is used to deploy the provisions in the "People's commune" period. It is the word “excited” that Mr.Fu repeatedly used in his recall. He says he was excited to see the movie projector the first time in his life, wondered how the black round boxes could relate to a movie. Of course, he is not the only one who was confused. At that time, people at the presence merely had watched the film ever before, and almost everyone was excited, highly-anticipated. “I rushed to the threshing-floor with two stools wolfing my dinner to occupy a good position. And I should get there earlier than my peers,”  recalls Mr. Fu wearing a smile on his face. He will not forget that viewers’ mood swung according to the story, and many sung accompany with the actor. What's more, when the film was over, viewers were jammed on the threshing-floor. The free movie had a huge impact on the villagers, and people began to talk about the film they watched recently, such as the actors or actresses, the story, and the music lyric. However, movies were shown randomly by the "People's commune." No one could forecast when a move would be shown next time. And few people can afford to movie ticket when the villagers were in poverty on the whole.

“I dream to be a PLA soldier when I grow up and fascinate war stories like Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy in which are alive with courage, and patriotism,” Fu remembers his life goal at that time. In his opinion, all the Revolutionary Model Dramas are full filled with patriotism and lead viewers to feel thankful to CCP. And it was successful. “When I watched the film at the open-air cinema, the flood of emotion came rushing back.” What impressed Mr. Fu most is the emotion aroused by the story. Thus, Mr. Fu took the Yang Zirong, one of the key figures in Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy and could imitate Yang to sing Beijing Opera vividly. Also, he collected information of Xiangling Tong who starred Yang. Besides, he could name many key figures in the Revolutionary Model Dramas, such as the Xi'er in the White-Haired Girl. However, the feelings fade away while watching the same film for too many times. No villagers at my age had ever heard of Hollywood and its films in the 1970s’ for the country’s bans. However, the old Soviet movies were accessible, Lenin in 1918 for instance with Chinese subtitle and dubbing. For Mr. Fu, the saddest moment in the 1970s’ was when Chairman Mao passed away while the joy came with the end of the Great Cultural Revolution.
Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy reflects the complex background of China at that time. Moreover, what Mr. Fu’s experience is typical and of help to understand the film development in the early 1970s’ of China. In the "People's commune" period, extreme collectivism leads to the poverty widely in rural China. The supply of public cultural products is governed by the "People's commune." Several modern Perking Opera was filmed to screen, which is called opera films in class. For example, Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy was filmed in the year 1970 by Beijing Film Studio according to IMDb which was not familiar to Mr. Fu.(“Zhi Qu Wei Hu Shan”) However, what Mr. Fu mentions in the interview provides evidence of the film-movement version of film history. Reflecting on the whole meeting, the cultural enlightenment of the opera films arouses my attention. Seeing from the micro level, Mr. Fu knew the film as an art form in person, start to learn Mandarin Chinese. What’s more, he could sing Perking Opera learning after the movie at the age of 13 which did have impacts on his participation in the college entrance examination in 1978. Besides the political meaning of these opera films such as Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy, Sha Jia Bang, The Red Lantern, the influence of micro level on the young should pay much attention to.
Based on the illustrations above, it is not hard to figure out the meaning of open-air cinemas in rural China in the 1970s’ and its impacts on individuals like Mr. Fu. From the point of me, I think that Mr. Fu’s experience is of great help to picture the scene of open-air cinemas which supports the film-movement at the early 1970s'. What’s more, it does impact Mr. Fu from the micro level, which is what we can not ignore.
