In my view, this sentence illustrates the fact that focusing on one’s jobs will lead to better long-term working performance than pursuing one’s career goals. In most occasions, working for one’s career and working for one’s current working results coincide with each other, because that both goals require one to accomplish their tasks effectively and show a good working performance. However, these two goals will lead to different results on some occasions, and I believe the force of concentration separates them from each other. The goal of working for one’s job means concentration and devoting oneself. D. Michael Abrashoff focuses on being a good captain, then he devotes himself to daily businesses instead of only accomplishing tasks required by the higher-up.

For me, when I started to learn math, I just wanted to gain a high score in the math test. Then, I just followed formulas to write down answers without thinking its in-depth reasons. It meant that I gave up the opportunity to find internal principles of math or master math. Therefore, my math was in the common degree. During my high school, I set the goal of mastering math because of my keen interest. When I focused on mastering math knowledge, I devoted myself to reviewing books and doing practices more than those required by teachers. As a result, both my understanding of math theories and my calculation skills were improved. This experience told me that focusing on the job itself would lead to better long-term results than pursuing career goals.

In this case, Abrashoff as a leader collects ideas from followers. Then, after responding to these ideas, Abrashoff improves the life quality of all members and increases the combat-readiness ratings by making much-needed changes. As a result, both members’ experience and the organizational performance are improved.
For me, this sentence aroused my memory of the experience in a learning group last year. When we started a discussion, the first thing of my group leader was to encourage every group member to share findings and express opinions. This process improved the whole performance of our learning group. For instance, when we simulated to establish and operate a company, another Asain member and I contributed our views on establishing the inclusive company culture to enhance the cross-cultural communication within the company. Then, when our group added this information into our final project, this information helped us to simulate a company with cultural diversity and gain praise from teachers. Through this experience, I learned the importance of listening in communication and the effectiveness of gathering ideas in enhancing group performance.
