AHIS 115: Land of Utopias: Latin American vanguardias of the 20th century
Take-home Final
DUE via iLearn, Thursday 19 March @ midnight
You are to write 3 essays in response to the questions below. Each should be between 3-5 double￾spaced typed pages. (Specific formatting below) Your answers do not require additional research
beyond the materials covered on the syllabus. I ask that you synthesize information from lectures
and readings, with particular attention to primary materials, i.e. specific art objects and artist’s
writings. When discussing art objects, makes sure you use visual analysis to substantiate your
claims. When discussing texts, properly cite using footnotes and contextualize. You will be
evaluated on your understanding of the readings and artworks you discuss and your capacity to
situate them in art-historical and social-historical contexts.
Formatting: • Times New Roman, 12 pt. font, double-spaced paragraphs with 1-inch margins
• Footnotes should follow the conventions for Chicago Manual of Style. Not MLA
• Be sure to include the question number at the start of each essay, so that I can easily
distinguish them.
• All titles of artworks should be italicized, with the date indicated at first mention. Use
full names (first and last names) at first mention.
• Paginate the pages and include your name and date in the header or footer.
• Please also include your last name in the filename of your document when you upload
it to iLearn/SafeAssign.
NB. Because this is a take-home exam, I will have much higher expectations in terms of structure,
argument, spelling, and grammar than I have with an in-class exam. Please review and edit your
responses accordingly before you upload them so that they are well organized and coherent.

QUESTION 1
We have discussed several large-scale architectural projects. Please discuss the National Schools of
Art in Cuba, as described in the documentary Unfinished Spaces, and Brasília, as covered in class and
course readings. Please consider the settings, urban plans, architectural styles and materials chosen to
realize each project. You should also discuss the architects and patrons who were at the center of
each project, as well as a brief description of the socio-political context that lead to their construction.
Be sure to incorporate one of the articles we’ve read for class to support your discussion with direct
quotations from the text.
QUESTION 2
Many of the utopian experiments that emerged in Latin America during the last century were in
response to emerging technologies. This is discussed explicitly in the following two book chapters on
the syllabus.

In your essay, please start with a 1-page summary of each chapter. In the remaining space, please
discuss the similarities and differences between the various national examples that each of the authors
presents. You should incorporate relevant quotations from the texts, and reference at least two
individual works of art from our course as your own examples.
QUESTION 3
Although visual artists in Latin America engaged with the European avant-gardes throughout the
twentieth century—with travels, circulating exhibitions, and reproductions in books and journals—
artists in the Southern Cone were especially engaged with European Constructivism. Joaquin Torres￾Garcia and Hélio Oiticica are two distinct visual artists, working in different cosmopolitan centers and
periods, that are examples of this exchange. Using Mari-Carmen Ramirez’ essay, “Vital Structures:
The Constructive Nexus in South America,” as your jumping off point, please discuss how Torres￾Garcia and Oiticica each deployed the visual languages of Constructivism to advance their respective
avant-garde projects. Your essay should incorporate at least two works of art by each artist, to serve as
examples.
