Instructions:
The final exam consists of two parts: three short answer questions (15 points each for a total of
45 points) and an essay (55 points). You must answer three of the four short answer questions.
There is a 250 word limit for each short answer response. In addition, you must write an essay
responding to one of the two essay prompts. There is a 1000 word limit for the essay.
These are the maximum word limits for each response; you may certainly write less as long as
you have met the grading criteria listed below.
You must submit your exam responses as a Word document or PDF through the “Final Exam”
submission portal under “Assignments” on Canvas by 5pm on Thursday, March 19. You may
submit your exam any time before that deadline.
Grading criteria:
Short answer questions
The short answers are intended to evaluate your ability to evaluate different theoretical
approaches and to explain particular outcomes in international relations with reference to a
range of actors and motivations. For the short answers, I am looking for you to do the following:
1) Answer the question that is given. Do not list every piece of information you can recall
about something in the question.
2) Fully answer the question. If there are multiple parts, be sure to answer all parts for full
credit.
3) Use specific examples and evidence where appropriate.
Essay:
The purpose of the essay is for you to reflect on and synthesize what you have learned in this
class this quarter.
Please note: you may only cite course materials; no outside sources.
For the essay I am looking for you to do the following:
1) Have a clear thesis statement that includes both a claim (“In this essay, I will argue …”)
and reasons (“ … because X, Y, and Z”) that fully answers the question in the prompt. I
highly recommend using this structure (“In this essay, I will argue __________ because
______________, _______________”) to ensure you have both a claim and reasons.
2) Support your thesis statement with accurate and relevant evidence from class lectures
and readings. You should draw on and cite appropriately material from the entire quarter,
both readings and lectures, as appropriate, but do not cite outside sources. You should

be able to write a strong essay based solely on the course material and your own analysis
and reflection.
3) Identify and refute potential counterarguments to or criticisms of your thesis. Why
might someone reasonably disagree with you? How would you respond to that criticism?
A-level essays:
 Have a clearly identifiable and nuanced or sophisticated thesis that incorporates both a
claim and multiple reasons supporting that claim. The thesis of the essay fully addresses
all parts of the essay prompt.
 Have thesis statements that go beyond blanket statements or generalities to include some
acknowledgement of the conditions under which their thesis hold, notable exceptions or
limitations, or other qualifications to the claim.
 Substantiate their thesis with accurate and relevant evidence drawn from multiple topics
addressed in the course (i.e., they will not be limited to international security or to human
rights), referencing material from both lectures and the textbook, as well as non-textbook
readings, and cite all references to course materials correctly (see information on citations
below).
 Include a thoughtful discussion of potential counter-arguments or criticisms to their
thesis, whether these counter-arguments are theoretical or substantive. In either case, the
counter-arguments identified should be serious and reasonable, not trivial or silly. The
essay should respond thoughtfully to these criticisms in a way that makes clear the
strength of the author’s initial thesis but does not simply restate it.
 Use clear language to communicate their arguments, are well-organized, and have clearly
been proof-read for obvious errors.
B-level essays:
 Have a clearly identifiable thesis that incorporates both a claim and multiple reasons
supporting that claim.
 Have a thesis that fully addresses all parts of the essay prompt, but may not be as nuanced
or sophisticated as an A-level thesis statement. Nonetheless, it will include some attempt
to acknowledge a qualification or limitation to the thesis statement.
 Substantiate their thesis with accurate and relevant evidence drawn from multiple topics
addressed in the course, though they reference a narrower selection of course material
(e.g., only material from the textbook and lectures or only two non-textbook readings). B
level essays cite references to course materials correctly, though there may be small
minor errors.
 Include some attempt to acknowledge counter-arguments to or criticisms of their thesis,
though these counter-arguments may not be as well-developed or well-reasoned as in an
A-essay. The essay should respond to these criticisms that goes beyond merely restating
the thesis.
 Use reasonably clear language, are well-organized, and have only small numbers of
obvious mechanical errors.
