Reflection on the “Case Study: A Question of Interpretation”

In the article “Case Study: A Question of Interpretation” written by Myra Ann Shulman, the problem about the influences that the misinterpretation can cause during the interaction of people is illustrated through the story between a student and a professor. This article indeed raises the importance of proper communication. Shulman is the English professor at American and Georgetown University who is also a writer of 12 books. This article is in her book Cultures in Contrast, which is a book that discusses the relations between different culture features.
What this article tries to convey is that the essential parts of communication include not only the expression but also the receiving message from another person correctly. In other words, if people do not listen and understand the message from other people, they might react with the language that is extremely wrong. For instance, in the article “A Question if Interpretation,” the original lines of the professor is: “Unless you(the student) work very hard to raise your average by rewriting your pages and speaking up in class, you may have to take this course again” (Shulman, 5). In this line, the professor is trying to convey to the student that she should work harder in order to pass this course. However, in the following article, the student apparently misunderstands the meaning of the professor. When the professor asks about the even worse performance of the student, the student, called Mei, response with this: “Why does it matter? You told me I was going to fail when we had the midterm conference” (Shulman, 5). In other words, Mei believes that the meaning of the professor is to make her grade fail no matter what she does, which is false. Therefore, the proper interpretation of the expression is essential for the people.
Personally, I agree with the viewpoint of the author in this article where the author describes the importance of interpretation during the process of communication. I have also been misunderstood during my high school. What I was trying to tell my friends is that the teacher is gone for a while. However, they received the message as the teacher are gone for the whole day. Therefore, when the teacher came back, they were punished due to the loose of the rule. Overall, I think that the concept of proper interpretation is indeed important for the conveying of the correct information.
