Report drafts
Plan
You can use a mind-map or a linear structure, as per the example provided. The word count
for the plan is not much, approx. 100 words – but you can use this effectively doing the
following:
• Avoid long sentences. Use dot points and common abbreviations where appropriate.
Remember that this is only a plan, not the essay itself.
• Be specific in your plan and include relevant details. For example, you can include
short citations next to your resources, whether you use a mind-map format or linear
format.

• Signal your evaluation in your plan. This is helpful in showing the marker that you
have read all part of the assessment task and understand what is required. It’s also a
helpful reminder to you to address this point in your report. For example:
• Findings – Academic A is the better contributor due to
academic publications
• You can also note very briefly what your recommendations will be.
The report
Issue and academics
Good to see some of you include a definition of your issue. When writing a report, it is a
good idea to include definitions (from an authoritative source) when introducing key ideas.
Make sure you also provide citations for your definitions.
Remember to provide enough details in this section. Don’t just discuss your example
academics’ contributions in a general way. But mention specific publications in this section
and name specific contributions, also providing citations.
Analysis
You don’t need to read all of your example academics work on the issue, but you should be
able to give appropriate summaries and paraphrases of the key academic and broader
contributions that you discuss in your report. You can use some quotes as well, if they are a
particularly powerful or interesting way to describe your academic’s research or
contribution to the issue. You should reflect on the significance of examples provided, as
these will lead to your findings.
Findings
This is where you will clearly state which is the better contributor and why. Clearly signal
this evaluation for your marker. For example:
Based on their strong academic publications to this issue, Academic A is the better
contributor to this issue of mental health. A strong publication record that is directly
relevant to this issue will ensure Academic A is seen as an expert within the field. Academic
B has older and less relevant publications, and their ability to contribute to effect change
may therefore be limited, despite their recent media interviews.
Note that the highlighted sentence here reflects the assignment task. This is a signpost to
the marker that you are addressing all parts of the assessment task. Be as clear and direct
about this as you can be.
Note also that how you determine effectiveness is up to you! You might think someone who
contributes media articles is more effective as they reach a wider audience, or you might
think someone who publishes lots of academic research is more effective as they are
building their credentials as experts in the field. Some of the additional readings on
academics and public life can help you think about this a little more.
Recommendations
Make sure that your recommendations are connected to your evaluation in your findings.
For example, following your research, you might find Academic A is the better contributor
due to a strong academic publication record. A logical recommendation that flows from
these findings might be something like: ‘It is recommended that the Deakin Board actively
encourage Deakin academics to publish on a relevant issue in reputable academic journals
and books.’ If you have found that Academic B is the better contributor due to better social
influence via media outlets, you might recommend that the Deakin Board provide media
training to all Deakin academics.
Citations and Referencing
Remember to provide citations for all biographical information about your example
academics.
Structure and writing
Remember to use formal tone in your report. This means that you avoid contractions (such
as ‘didn’t’ should be ‘did not’) and avoid using the term ‘we’ or ‘us’.
Other tips
Refer to your academic by their full title and name when you first introduce them (e.g.
Professor Tim Flannery), and then by their last name only (e.g. Flannery argues that). It’s a
strange academic convention perhaps, be we only refer to other academics’ last names
when we engage with their ideas in our writing.
