The Social Construction of…
For your paper assignment, you will explain the social construction of something in society. You will
begin by explaining the process of social construction. This should not come word for word from
either lecture or the Roy’s book, but instead should show that you understand the process. Next,
pick from one of the articles below and describe the process whereby the concept is socially
constructed. Make sure you explain how we typically view this as the result of a natural phenomenon
and how your chosen article disputes that view. Are there any major flaws in the author’s logic? Is
there any evidence can you bring to bear to show why the arguments in the article are problematic?
Alternatively, what kind of evidence could you use to show why the arguments seem sound (this
should be evidence that you can point to from another source, either your own experience or
another article—academic or otherwise). All of the articles are available on the course website.

Guidelines
1. Your paper should by typed, double-spaced, carefully proofread and three to four pages in
length. Font should be 12pt and margins should be one inch.
2. Your paper is due at 1:45pm on October 17 via Turnitin. Papers will not be accepted more
than three days after the due date, nor will they be expected in any form other than on
Turnitin.
3. Although you do not need a cover page, make sure you include your TAs name and section
number on the paper.
4. I have no preference in terms of the style that you use for your in text and reference
citations. I would like you to be consistent, however. You should visit the following links for
more information on proper citations in either MLA or APA style.
