The Social Vigilance of Modern People: How Hard is it to Hug a Stranger?
Introduction
In this essay, the social vigilance is discussed through a social observation that tends to evaluate the level of resistance of people towards a hug comes from a stranger. This observation covers 100 effective participants. Sixty-four of the participants expressed their rejections of a hug while only thirty-six participants shared a hug with the experimenter. The result of the observation shows that the people have a high level of social vigilance towards the male experimenters while the female experimenters are more acceptable for the participants. The reasons why over 60 percent of people refuse a hug are from multiple perspectives, which includes the awareness of possible diseases, the unfamiliarity, and the lack of sufficient time. Overall, the distrust and estrangement are detected in this observation.
The Process and Result of the observation
With the advancing social media like Twitter, Facebook, and Tinder, people’s range of social communication broadened while people become more and more cautious and insecure in the real world. The Vigilance in the social environment has the effect on the cardiovascular reactivity (Smith, et al. 2000). Therefore, the observation is to break the cautions of people have toward the strangers in the society by asking kindly for a hug with them. In order to balance the influence of the gender actor, the experimenters are composed of two male and two female. All of them spreads one the streets in Irvine, Los Angeles. This observation collects two types of data. One of the collecting data is the number of people who accept the hug and those who do not. Another information gathered in this observation is the reason of why or why not people accept the hug proposes. After two days of effort, there are total 100 results that are valid to analyze for this topic.

The specific data shows that 64 people are not willing to share a hug with a stranger while only 36 people who accept. Among the people who decline the hug proposal, there are 17 people who do not reply to our follow-up question, which is why would they turn down a kind hug. Fortunately, the rest of people state their reasons for denying. The major reason can be sorted into three perspectives. The top reason of why people denying the hug, which 28 people responded, is that hugging does not fit into their pattern of interacting with a stranger. In other words, they are not used to the intimate contact with someone they are not familiar with. Another major reason for people to decline the hug is that they hold the opinion that there are possible changes that the experimenters might have diseases on them. Therefore, there are ten people who decline the hug due to the avoidance of the potential diseases. The last reason for people to reject the hug refers to the distrust towards the experimenters. Besides the rejection, there are also people who do not decline the hug. When being asked about why they are willing to share a hug with a stranger, their answer are both the same: “why not?”
The reason why this observation chooses the hug to break the social vigilance is that hug is viewed as a intimate contact with others in the society. To ask people to perform the intimate relationship with people is definitely a challenge for most people. What the experimenters find fascinating is that the attitudes from the strangers have the reverse effect on themselves as well. When people turn them down, they feel uncomfortable and disappointed while feeling astonished by the agreements from the strangers. The influence from the strangers plays an essential role in the psychological status of people. However, the social vigilance prevents people from accepting and receiving the kindness from others in the society.
Analyses on the Collected Data
Through this observation, the social vigilance, as one of the cultural norms, have significant influences on the patterns of people’s social communication. During the social settings and interactions, the social norms like social vigilance do cause both positive and negative effects. The social vigilance does eliminate the potential risks of people getting diseases from the strangers by avoiding intimate contact with them. However, the distrust that occurs with the social vigilance has some adverse effect on the social communication. In this observation, there are over sixty people decline the hug from strangers. Most of their justifications are out of the social vigilance. In the social perspective, the conformity refers to the actors that follow the attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors to group norms (Cialdini & Goldstein 2004). Therefore, the influence of social vigilance does follow the pattern of the conformity. Even though there is no valid research shows that hugging spread any diseases in particular, 10 percent of people choose to believe that they will be infected through hug with strangers.
During this observation, what is not in the consideration that should be included in the process is the analysis of the gender and race of the participants and
