“How Language Shapes Thought” & “Shakespeare in the Bush”
1.What attracts me the most in “How Language Shapes Thought” is the discussion of the interaction between the language and people’s thoughts. In that article, Lera Boroditsky illustrates that the differences in the language actual influences the people logical thinking (65). For instance, the people who speak English might have a totally different way viewing certain objects with the people in Asia. According to Boroditsky, the bilinguals who speak both the Arabic and Hebrew are more positively activated when using Arabic to do the test than Hebrew (65). Therefore, the language does show certain influences on people’s thoughts.
2. Something I found interesting in the article “Shakespeare in the Bush” is the cultural influences towards the interpretation of certain language concepts. During the description of Shakespeare by Laura Bohannan to the people in West Africa, even the West African people can understand each word illustrated by Bohannan, they still have troubles interpreting some of the plots in the story. For instance, when Bohannan says that Hamlet does not have other wives, the West African people express their disbelief and say that a chief must have multiple wives (para.29). In my opinion, this story emphasizes the importance of people’s initiative.
3. Another question that comes up when reading these two articles is “What exactly is the dominant role that composes the thought of human beings?” Both Boroditsky and Bohannan discuss this topic in their articles. Boroditsky focuses on the importance of the language while Bohannan expresses the essential role of people’s cultural thought. In my opinion, the language does influence people with their pattern of thinking. However, it is people’s initiative that determines the belief of themselves.
