The Deviant Behavior of My Friend Tao
Tao cheated on his girlfriend. Tao Jiang was one of my friends when I was in high school. Back then we were best friends for each other. We used to hang out almost every day in high school since we both are the resident students. One day at class, there was a girl coming to our class looking for Tao when we just finished our literature class. I asked Tao about who that girl was. I was curious because I had never seen this girl before. After I asked the question, Tao started to act a little bit anxious and replied: “She is just one of my old friend.” And run out after saying that. I got all confused and asked another friend of Tao and me, Ming Zhang, about who that girl was. Ming became all weird and asked instead: “you don’t know who that is?” I shook my head. Ming said: “She is Tao’s girlfriend in this school.” Then I realized that Tao had cheated on his girlfriend since Tao had a girlfriend who went to another school. At first, I could not believe what I heard and asked Ming: “How did you know that is not just his friend?” Ming said to me: “I saw them kissing on the hallway one day. That is not what friends will do to each other.” At this point, our conversation had been heard by the students near Ming and me. Tao and I stopped talking. But I could hear that all the students near us whisper to each other like: “Did you just hear? Tao

Jiang is cheating on his girlfriend...” “I thought Tao Jiang was a nice guy. I can’t believe...” “Oh my god, he is so disgusting...” Finally, I could not stand those comments and yelled: “That’s enough!” Everybody went to silence.
I think that out of the four theories, the control theory is the best match for the situation of Tao since the action of Tao can be perfectly explained based on the control theory. Control theory, by definition, can be identified as the description of the self-regulating system of the human beings (“What is Control Theory” para.1). More specifically, the control theory illustrates that human beings have the ability to control their behaviors based on the education they receive an overall consideration of the situation. The control theory believes that it is the self-regulating system of human beings that make a society in order. In the case of Tao, it is the control of fulfilling their natural desire that is weakened, which cause him to act with such deviant behavior. The natural attraction from that girl makes Tao give up the control of his sexual desire. The strain theory does not match to Tao since Tao is choosing the wrong goal instead of chasing the goal that is difficult for him to achieve. The differential association also does not match to Tao since he did not learn his behavior from other people. In addition, the labeling theory cannot define the action of Tao either because there are no negative labels attach to Tao, which can be seen from the reaction of my classmate. Based on the thorough interpretation of those four theories about human behaviors, I think that the control theory is indeed the best match for Tao’s action.
