For your final journal, you will increase your awareness of written genres from another discipline and of their connection to the topics in College Writing. The discipline can be from your own major or outside of your major; the only restriction is that it must be a discipline which includes a significant amount of reading and writing (i.e. don’t choose Finite Math, please). Once you have chosen a discipline, complete Part I and Part II below.

Part I: Choose a reading you have done for another class.

1. Explain salient features of the text:
●What is the title and who is the author of the text?
●What class did you complete the reading for?
●How would you describe the text’s genre?
●What discipline(s) is the genre common in?
●What is the purpose of the genre?
●What is the main idea of the text you have chosen? Summarize it in a way that I, who am not an expert in the field, can understand. Don’t go into too much detail, please, but make sure I can understand the main point.
●What does the text have in common with any of the readings we have done in College Writing 1?

2. Discuss how you think this reading will help you improve your writing. What features of language, style, or organization do you notice, and how can you apply them to your writing? Consider the following features: grammar, vocabulary, tone, paragraph structure, sequence of ideas, use of evidence, etc.


Part II: Choose a writing assignment you have done for the same class.

1. Explain salient features of the writing assignment:
●What was the name of the assignment?
●How would you describe the genre of the assignment?
●What discipline(s) is the genre common in?
●What is the purpose of the genre?
●What features of language, style, or organization are important in the genre?
●What features of the genre did you struggle with or were you particularly successful in?

2. Discuss how you can apply topics from College Writing to successfully complete the genre.


Be prepared to discuss your findings in class.
