Important Writing CRITIQUE
TOPIC: The classic or contemporary writing assigned to/chosen by you
LENGTH: 1200 words or more TYPED (12-point font, double spaced, 1” margins all around)
DUE: Beginning of class MONDAY, DECEMBER 17, 2018
VALUE: 5% of your total grade
GUIDELINES:
You are required to write a critique of at least 1200 words in length on an important classic or contemporary
social psychological written work that was assigned to you in class. Your critique is due at the beginning of
class on Monday, December 17, 2018. Late papers will devalue by 1% for each day they are late.
Completion of the important writing critique will be worth 5% of your total grade.
1. Select an article from the list of classic and contemporary studies and reviews in social psychology.
2. Read the written work critically looking for details of the research question that was investigated in the
study, or details of the topic if it is a review article or chapter.
3. Write a paper addressing the following:
a. What was the research question of interest?
b. What about the topic had previously been studied (if offered by the author(s))?
c. How did the researchers operationally define the variables? What was their Dependent Variable
and how was it defined?
d. How did the researchers investigate their question? Describe the study.
e. What did the researchers find? (Don’t worry about explaining the statistics if there are any
included.)
f. What conclusions did the researchers offer to explain their findings?
g. What do YOU think about the study?
h. How does it offer growth to the current knowledge of the topic?
i. What do YOU think would be an appropriate next study?
4. NOTE: If your work does not talk about a specific study, it is a review of a body of knowledge on your
topic. If that is the case, then describe in detail how your topic has been studied in the past and how
the topic has evolved over the years that the review includes. Discuss the importance of the research
on your topic and how future researchers might add to the body of knowledge (i.e. what studies can be
done next).
5. Make sure your paper is properly formatted (12-point font, double spaced, 1” margins all around; top,
bottom, left and right)
