Bokina article discussion
1.TOPIC
As the title implies, the topic of this article is clearly “ Opera and Republican Virtue,” and use Beethoven’s Fidelio as the political text. From the introduction, the topic is explained reasonably. At first, this article clarifies the Fidelio is “fit,” and can represent the important area of history of political thought. The three areas of political history play an important part and make the organization of the article clear. The examples of the virtue in the different area of political history are provided, such as the time of Greek city and the ancient Roman Republic. The reason that Fidelio is fit to take as the political text is that it is the symbolism of the Revolution, and “derives its political character through its pervasive concern with republican virtue.”
2.THESIS
It is not easy to illustrate its thesis with just one. There are two candidate sentences. Both the two sentences are at the end of the introduction. One reads: this essay will “ examine the operatic depictions of male virtue and female virtue.” This sentence stresses the depiction of virtue in an operatic way. At the end of the same paragraph, it also emphases the impacts of “civic virtue” on the state. The republicanism of Fidelio lies in the opera’s emphasis on republican virtue.
3.ARGUMENT
If it is accepted that the thesis of this essay is to examine the stresses on the republican virtue of the Fidelio, that the depiction of virtue based on gender. Then the following are the list of arguments that I can recognize:
1.Operatic politics: the difference between Mozart and Beethoven’s political and social values are apparent and have enormous consequences on the operas.
2.Theatrical politics: contrast three pairs of moral and political values in Fidelio inclusive of self-interest and patriotism, inconstancy and fidelity, tyranny and republicanism.
4. OUTLINE
By summarizing each paragraph of the article, groups of the sentence are used to clarify the framework.

I.INTRODUCTION
Beethoven’s opera Fidelio represents a crucial era in the history of political ideas. In the time of the Greek city-states and the ancient Roman Republic, republicanism includes lots of non-monarchical constitutional arrangements.
Virtue is the concept with different explanations in Renaissance revival and the late eighteenth century, especially the French Revolution.
II.BODY: ANALYSIS OF THEATRICAL POLITICS AND OPERATIC POLITICS
A.Operatic politics: the difference between Mozart and Beethoven’s political and social values are apparent and have enormous consequences on the operas.
B.Theatrical politics: contrast three pairs of moral and political values in Fidelio inclusive of self-interest and patriotism, inconstancy and fidelity, tyranny and republicanism.
1. Rocco and Florestan present the change form of republicanism self-interest to patriotism.
2. Marzelline and Leonore in two acts express the changes of republicanism from inconstancy to fidelity.
3. Pizarro and Fernando in the two acts imply the changes of republicanism from tyranny to the virtuous state.
III.CONCLUSION
The author doesn’t leave out the opera that is not compatible with “the typical image of the Revolution” and takes the social and political ambiguities of the opera into consideration.
Also, the author looks at the Fidelio as an excellent example to support the Revolution. He also points out that some interpretations miss the spirit of republican virtue, and don’t take them as a whole. Due to the ambiguities of the Fidelio, to definite, its political interpretation is not natural.
5. INTRODUCTION AND CONCLUSION
The author’s introduction works very well. It starts with his statement that Beethoven’s opera Fidelio represents the transition from the rationalistic social criticism of the earlier pre-Revolution Enlightenment to the virtuous republicanism of the later Enlightenment and the French Revolution. Then the virtue has different meanings at different times, which leads to the arguments of this article. I think the transition of the introduction is successful and it makes the organization of this article.
I find the conclusion of this article is effective. In conclusion, the author reviews the thesis and stresses that the ambiguities of the Fidelio lead to its difficulty in its definition its political interpretation. It is easy to identify that the whole conclusion section of this essay is cogent and convincing.
6.TECHNICAL QUALITIES
The writing is clear and straightforward. The reader can understand the organization of the article quickly. Besides, the titles use the same format logically, which is of help for readers to get the point of the certain paragraph at first glance. The citations practices in the article are well developed, which makes the article convincing, and provides the additional ways to know about the same topic.
