We are newly minted spectators of Greek tragedy, and I want for us to expand our horizons so that we can approach the ancient dramatic tradition with a fresh, engaging perspective. We have been reading Antigone, and so far we have discussed the multiplicity of drama (it can have multiple meanings/interpretations that depend on the performance). I want for you to argue for a particular interpretation of Antigone, such as any specific idea that falls under any of the literary theories we has discussed thus far; this argument will then need to be substantiated by examples from the text and outside research.
Some example questions you may ask include:
Is Antigone a strong female lead who betrays all man-made laws for her own beliefs?
Or, is she just betraying man-made laws for the masculine dominance of her brother?
What is the psychology of the characters like? Are they driven to madness?
Is Antigone’s torment all within her own mind? How about Creon?
Does the environment play a role in the play? Does it propel the plot forward?
