Essential Question 2: Did the white (former Confederate) South successfully resist Radical Reconstruction [note that you cannot begin to answer this question until you first explain what Radical Reconstruction was]? Why or why not?

Radical Reconstruction refers to the historical event that the United States government performed in the year 1863 in order to reunite the north and the southern United States and provide equal rights for the African American people. Based on the understanding of the textbook and result of the history, it is reasonable to state that the Radical Reconstruction was resisted by the southern U.S. successfully since even though the southern US did rejoin the union and the fourteenth and fifteenth amendments were established, the situation of the African Americans were not improved at all. Moreover, according to the image provided by the course, the situation of the African Americans became worse than before.[ Image: ‘Worse than Slavery’ by Thomas Nast in Harper’s Weekly (24 October 1874)]
There are various reasons that make the Radical Reconstruction fail. First of all, the fifteenth and fourteenth amendments were indeed designed for the benefits of the African American people. As illustrated in the textbook, the fourteenth amendment suggests that all individuals who are born in the United States should be identified as the citizen of the United States.[ Matthew Mooney, History of the U.S. Since 1865. (California: Santa Barbara City College, 2012), 8] In other words, African American people are also the US citizens based on the constitution. However, the establishment of those two amendments violated the benefits of the white south citizens of the United States since they were banned from selling and using African American people as their personal properties. According to the textbook, many states in the south still choose to resist the law even though the amendments had established.[ Mooney, History of the U.S.12]
Overall, under the aggressive resistance of the south, the government choose to give up on the improvement of the situation of African Americans since they believe that the union of the country are more important than the living situation of the African American people. Therefore, the white south indeed resisted the radical reconstruction of 1863 even though the government passed the fifteenth and fourteenth amendments.
