The Research Essay
Purpose:  This essay will involve elements of argumentative writing, research, and documentation.  It will allow the student to show how well he/she has mastered essay organization, correct grammar use, and vocabulary choices within the short essay.  Essay style is flexible.  You may use an essay style of your choosing such as cause and effect, argumentative, problem –solution etc.
Important:  Your work must be an original essay written by you.   You cannot have anyone help you write the essay or write the essay for you.  You may not use essays submitted previously for other courses.  You must not purchase your essay or download any part of it from the Internet.
The research paper must
Ø Be typed, double spaced (5 - 6 pages; 1650 words – 2000 words excluding title page and reference page)
Ø Use at least 5 academic sources.  Mainstream English language newspapers will be accepted as sources for this essay, but they will not be counted as academic sources.
Ø Academic sources can include peer-reviewed journal articles and/or chapters from books that are academic and related to your topic.  
Ø Have a cover page and reference page in APA format
Ø Have a clear, thesis, with a topic, controlling idea, and three predictors.
Ø Include a refutation with a concession if using an argumentative essay format.
Ø Use Arial, Times New Roman, or Calibri 12 point font
Ø link ideas through transitions
Ø include at least two academic supports i.e. in –text citations in each body paragraph
Ø not include more than one quote in each body paragraph.  Quotes must be properly introduced, cited, and explained.  Paraphrases are strongly preferred.  Quotes cannot be longer than two sentences.
Ø Include page numbers with citations.
A rough draft MUST be handed in prior to the submission of the final version.  Paper copies of all research used must be handed in with the essay. All relevant information in said articles must be highlighted. The essay must also be submitted to turnitin.com.  The essay will be the foundation of a formal academic presentation.  First Draft of the Research Essay is  Due:  Thursday of Week 13.
 
 
The Presentation:
Purpose:  The presentation will give the student an opportunity to present their research paper to the class.  The student will need to express an opinion i.e. a thesis, and defend that opinion in front of the class.  Duration:  10 – 15 minutes; Discussion 5 minutes +.
Criteria:  The presentation must –
· Have PPT slides
· Have a clear and comprehensive outline that clearly shows all parts of the presentation
· clearly introduce the issue and give background information about it
· use your own language (copied content is not acceptable; all sources must be given credit using in-text citations)
· clearly show your opinion and why you hold it (give evidence)
· include a refutation of opposing arguments, and a concession
· have a list of references at the very end of your presentation
· include a 1-2 minute video that has been properly integrated*
· include a full conclusion that gives the audience food for thought
· allow for the audience to ask questions and engage in a discussion/debate
*showing a video is optional
The presentations will be done during week 14, after the essays have been submitted.
Argumentative Research Essay Topics:
Use one of the suggested topics:  you are free to use a topic of your own choosing, one not on the list provided, but you must get approval from the teacher before beginning your research.
