Through giving each learner the power of knowledge and intelligence, education changes both the society and individuals. Based on Zakaria’s discussion in “Knowledge and Power” and “In Defense of Today’ s Youth,” this paper will show the multiple impacts of education. From the perspective of society and individuals, education stimulates the communication of ideas and technologies to contribute to social justice and technological improvements, and it also spreads disciplinary and liberal knowledge to contribute to the development of individuals.
As for the society, education contributes to promoting social justice and stimulating technological progress. Firstly, according to Zakaria, liberal education leads individuals to involve in more knowledge and liberal ideas, which results in the weaker political control of the public (10). I agree with his idea, and I believe that this process is a progress of social justice. The political control means that the public thinks the will of the politicians, but liberal education leads more people to find their inner desire for freedom and stand beside politicians as equals. Secondly, in history, education contributes to the improvements of life quality and length (Zakaria, 5). I consider how this happens and find that education drives both the social science and natural science to go to step further. The inheritance and communication of knowledge strengthen the power of knowledge, so the power of knowledge leads human beings to live a better life.
For me, education encourages me to continue to improve myself. Zakaria points out that the current education is lacking liberal elements and makes the education a “me” generation (12), which means that the young generation pays less attention to things but self-success. The author emphasizes the importance of liberal education. However, as a number of the “me” generation, I believe that disciplinary knowledge is also good. Years of disciplinary knowledge changes me from a child to an intelligent talent. Education is a power more than a tool, and I believe that both disciplinary knowledge and liberal thinking have a positive influence on the future development of my life.
Above all, through contributing to social justice, technological progress, and individual improvements, education changes the society and individuals positively.
